Tim Vickery Interview

Tim Vickery was nominated for the Best Football Journalist award. We asked Tim to talk about the awards, how 2010 had turned out for him, future plans and of course, who he would vote for in the awards. Here’s the interview:

1) You’ve been nominated for Best Football Journalist, chosen by both fans and industry experts, how does it feel?

FEEL’S GREAT! WHEN I STARTED OUT WITH THIS PROJECT ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS TO HAVE A VOICE, TO MAKE A TINY CONTRIBUTION TO THE GREAT DEBATE. IF I’M DOING THAT, THEN MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

2) What kind of year has 2010 been for Tim Vickery?

BETTER THAN I COULD HAVE HOPED. MAKES ME WANT TO RAISE A GLASS AND TOAST GOOD TIMES GONE BY – AND EVEN BETTER TIMES TO COME!

3) What do you think has been the key factor in your success?

BY FAR THE KEY FACTOR IN MY STRICTLY RELATIVE SUCCESS IS HAVING SUCH A WONDERFULLY RICH AND FASCINATING AREA TO COVER – I OWE IT ALL TO SOUTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL. THAT IS BY FAR THE BIGGEST FACTOR. COMING A LONG WAY BEHIND I THINK THE NEXT MOST IMPORTANT THING IS A CAPACITY TO THINK FOR MYSELF – WHICH SEEMS TO HELP MY WORK STAND OUT AS SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT, WHETHER FOR GOOD REASONS OR BAD.

4) If you were casting a vote for your any of your fellow nominees, who would it be?

PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE. I HAVEN’T SEEN THE LIST OF FELLOW NOMINEES, AND EVEN IF I HAD, I MIGHT NOT BE TOO ACQUAINTED WITH THEIR WORK. I DON’T TEND TO READ THAT MUCH ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOOTBALL STUFF – NOTHING AGAINST IT, JUST ABSENCE OF TIME – WHAT DOES HE KNOW OF FOOTBALL WHO ONLY FOOTBALL KNOWS, ETC? I HOPE MY FELLOW NOMINEES GET AS MUCH PLEASURE FROM THEIR PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AS I DO FROM MINE – THAT, MORE THAN ANY PRIZE, IS THE TRUE REWARD.

5) What’s next for Tim Vickery?

NO GREAT MYSTERIES, MORE OF THE SAME. TO ADAPT ROBERT MITCHUM, I INTEND TO GO ON POINTING MY SUIT AT THE MICROPHONE AND THE LAPTOP.

6) Have you seen the Castrol Football Rankings? What do you think about them, and who do you think is the best footballer in the world at the moment?

I HAVEN’T, AND TO BE HONEST, I THINK TOO MUCH TIME IS SPENT DISCUSSING INDIVIDUAL AWARDS IN WHAT IS A COLLECTIVE SPORT.

You can vote for Tim Vickery in the following award category:

Best Football Journalist
