Goal.com Interview
Goal.com was nominated for the Best Football Website. We Asked Goal.com PR Director, Will Wood, to talk about the awards, how 2010 had turned out for Goal, future plans and of course who he would vote for in the awards. Here’s the interview:
1) You’ve been nominated for Best Football Site, chosen by both fans and industry experts, how does it feel?
We’re delighted to have been nominated for this award, especially as it’s been chosen by both the fans and industry experts. We strive to offer the best and most comprehensive football news from around the world, and nominations such as this are a great compliment to the reporters who work hard for Goal.com every single day. We operate in a competitive market so to be recognised, particularly by the fans who are the most important in our eyes, is a major achievement.
2) What kind of year has 2010 been for Goal.com?
This year has been a great one for Goal.com. Domestically we have seen many highlights over the last 12 months, and our coverage of the leagues around the world gets stronger year on year. Similarly, the 2010 FIFA World Cup saw us reach new heights in terms of fans visiting Goal.com, breaking all our records and creating a truly worldwide celebration of the competition. We are the largest new media football community and growing, and I think everyone involved – be they reporters, editors or the fans themselves – can sense that we are a growing force.
3) What do you think has been the key factor in your success?
I believe it’s the strength and size of our worldwide community and the quality of our coverage. If something happens on the other side of the world, Goal.com can call on its local expert to offer a representative opinion on the development, share it with our network and provide an accurate, first-hand account. We also continue to get even closer to the action through our increasing number of exclusive interviews and editorials, and we engage our users to encourage them to share their experience of the beautiful game.
4) If you were casting a vote for your any of your fellow nominees, who would it be?
Personally I’m a big fan of BBC Football. The BBC is an institution that has credibility in its core ethos, and the BBC Football website follows suit with great reporting, supported by editorials from experts on a number of different areas such as Phil McNulty and Tim Vickery.
5) What’s next for Goal.com?
We will be continuing our high standard of football coverage and will seek to explore new cultures and communities that connect with the game. We will continue to excite and stimulate fans of Goal.com by bringing them coverage of all the key events, plus areas of the game that play a positive role in the world that they may have known little about previously.
6) Have you seen the Castrol Football Rankings? What do you think about them, and who do you think is the best footballer in the world at the moment?
Football is all about opinions and the Castrol Football Rankings are a fantastic way of igniting discussion as to who is the best player in the world, what the outcome of games will be and a number of other topics. In my eyes the best player in the world is Lionel Messi, something the Castrol Football Rankings agrees with too.
